Led by Shawn L. Deadwiler, Black Veterans Empowerment Council (BVEC) is a non-partisan council of over 39 national, state and local veteran organizations to include for profit companies united to address and eliminate racial and economic disparities faced by Black veterans and their families. BVEC works tirelessly to advocate for inclusive policies, enforce fair access to benefits, and promote opportunities for economic empowerment.

With a mission to ensure that every Black veteran receives the recognition, support, and resources they deserve, BVEC champions critical initiatives such as health care accessibility, housing stability, education benefits, entrepreneurial funding, and historical preservation. The council also emphasizes the importance of accountability through the creation of oversight bodies like the VA Advisory Committee on African American Affairs.

At the core of BVEC’s efforts is the commitment to honoring the legacy of Black veterans, whose service and sacrifices have often been overlooked throughout history. By fostering a future of equitable opportunities, BVEC is building stronger communities and empowering Black veterans to thrive.

Shawn L. Deadwiler is a distinguished veteran, entrepreneur, and leader dedicated to advocating for Black veterans. He is currently the Chairman of the Board and President of the Black Veterans Empowerment Council (BVEC). A native of Phoenix, AZ, Mr. Deadwiler enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 19 and served for 12 years of active duty, followed by three years in the reserves. His service included working at the command level in prestigious roles supporting high-ranking officers and senior enlisted at headquarter organizations such as Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), USSPACECOM, NORAD, United States Air Force in Europe (USAFE) and the Air Staff at the Pentagon. Mr. Deadwiler earned several military accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals, and an Air Force Achievement Medal.

After his military career, Mr. Deadwiler transitioned to civilian roles, including serving as a Network Manager for the IRS Chief Counsel, overseeing technological services across the United States. His success in leveraging his skills to benefit organizations led him to entrepreneurship. For over 27 years, Mr. Deadwiler has managed multiple businesses, including serving as COO of an SBA 8(a) company named top 25 in Washington Technology in 2008 and as the Chairman and CEO of The SLD Group and Mission Uplift Inc., both Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB).

His desire to address the challenges faced by Black veterans led him to co-found the BVEC, which unites veterans' organizations and advocates for Black veterans' needs, particularly focusing on racial and economic inequities. Since becoming Chairman and President of BVEC in December 2022, Mr. Deadwiler has expanded the organization significantly, adding over 39 member organizations and making impactful contributions to legislation and advocacy.

Mr. Deadwiler resides in both Phoenix, Arizona, and North Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife Gala.
